Mission

Newrosis is an online journal dedicated to publishing speculative comics.

Speculative, in this case, is not limited to typical science fiction or fantasy, but covers the broadest sense of transcending reality in some daring, original way, without being overly burdened by the many tropes and cliches that infest comics and speculative fiction alike.

More concrete guidelines can be found on the submit page.

> Mode of operation

Apart from existential and financial ones, Newrosis has no issues. New artworks are published individually on a rolling basis, as soon as they are accepted.

The journal aims to be a distraction-free environment dedicated to appreciating comics, with minimal clutter, chatter, and unnecessary features.

Each artwork is shown vertically, as a column of independent panels appearing one after another, rather than a multi-panel layout. This enables optimal viewing on a variety of screens and devices.

As part of its ruthlessness toward any form of corrosive time-waste, Newrosis avoids all presence on social media. Creators themselves therefore have a crucial role in spreading the word about this place and the art that is shown here.

> Editor

Newrosis’s founding editor, and currently its only human staff member, is Dan Bornstein.

Dan is several things, including:

  • A writer of speculative fiction, poetry, and essays, in both English and Hebrew. His work in English has appeared, among other places, in Failbetter, Daily Science Fiction, Star*Line, Scifaikuest, and The Chamber.
  • A visual artist and webcomics creator focusing on wordless, purely visual storytelling.
  • A language specialist in Japanese who has started several projects dedicated to literary translation of short fiction and poetry.

Dan’s personal website, where he regularly publishes his own webcomics and textual work, is—perhaps unsurprisingly—danbornstein.com.
