Submit

Submissions are handled exclusively through the journal’s dedicated Moksha page—before heading there, please carefully read these guidelines.

> What to send

Newrosis considers any artwork that:

  • Can plausibly be classified as comics (including single-panel) or sequential art;
  • Tells, or suggests, a story mainly through visual means, without relying on lengthy dialogues—or even better, without any text at all;
  • Expresses original, imaginative ideas, be they surreal, philosophical, absurd, antisocial, satirical, alternative, avant-garde, dark, macabre, weird, or more typical (yet somehow eccentric) science fiction/fantasy;
  • Aspires to timelessness and universality, so that it is free from the contexts of the present time and place and can, at least in theory, communicate with anyone, anywhere, anytime;
  • Was created by a human being (images created entirely by AI tools are not allowed).

Work from all over the world is welcome and encouraged.

Text, if used, should be in English or be accompanied by an English translation for every panel (see more about language in part 3 below).

No simultaneous submissions: your work cannot be under consideration here and elsewhere at the same time.

No multiple submissions to this journal at the same time: wait for a decision on your current submission before sending more.

There is no hard limit on how many panels can be in a comic strip, but a reasonable number for online viewing is up to 25 panels or so.

> Technical details

Each comic strips on Newrosis is presented as a vertical series of individual panels, which allows it to be viewed conveniently on any screen size.

Each submission is a self-contained story, which can range from 1 to 25 panels.

Each panel should be in a separate image file, named according to the work title and numbered according to its place in the sequence (example: name_1.jpg, name_2.jpg, and so on).

The Moksha system only accepts single-file submissions, which means that:

If you submit a single-panel work, you can send it directly as an image file (only JPG or PNG in this case).

For multiple-panel submissions, all files need to be bundled into one .zip file.

Individual panels can be in any aspect ratio, but the best for online visibility is a perfect square or a vertical rectangle (as in portrait mode).

It’s OK if speech balloons break out of frames and appear on white background, as long as everything is clearly visible.

Accepted file types: JPG, PNG, WebP, SVG (vector).

Panel width must be precisely 1000 px.

Individual files (i.e., each panel) must not exceed 200 KB.

(You can use a wonderful program called Irfanview for changing image files to user-defined specifications).

> Language

If your work is in a language other than English, add a text file to the .zip submission.

This file will contain accurate English translations of the text that appears in speech balloons in every panel.

On the Newrosis website, these translations will be shown as additional text under their respective panels.

Note: This feature is only for relatively simple panels. Please avoid submitting foreign-language work with lengthy dialogue or panels where several characters speak simultaneously.

> When to send

Any time. Newrosis has no deadlines to meet or quotas to fill, so publication is done on a rolling basis.

In case your work is accepted, you will first receive an acceptance message via Moksha. This will later be followed by an additional email from the editor (dan@danbornstein.com) to ask for your permission to publish, as well as payment details if you wish to receive a creator bonus.

> Response time

Decisions are typically sent within one week.

Rejection or acceptance depends on the editor’s personal taste and should not be taken as objective aesthetic judgment of your work.

In other words, don’t be discouraged if you get a “no.” Keep making more, and keep sending your best.

> Payment

Accepted artworks receive a creator bonus of $10, if requested by the submitter.

Payment can only be sent to submitters who own an account with an online service that enables them to request payment by credit card from anyone, such as PayPal, Stripe, and so on. (No payment can be made through services that require the payer to have an account too).

If you are not on one of these services, or do not wish to be paid, you are welcome to submit regardless!

Newrosis does not charge for submission.

The journal is, in addition, committed to remaining completely free to read.

> Copyright

Copyright to artworks remains entirely with their respective creators. There are no restrictions on creators’ reuse of their work elsewhere once it has appeared here.

Payment by Newrosis is strictly an appreciation bonus, and does not involve any limitations placed on creators or any purchase of rights.

> Publicity

In case your work is published, Newrosis kindly asks that you post at least one link at an online venue of your choice, pointing either to your work’s URL or to the website’s homepage.

Just like in the old days, this journal, and the art it showcases, depend on creators to spread the word.
